UOI

Students spent this week making final preparations for their mini-PYP exhibition. On Tuesday, they invited Grade 8 students to their classroom to practice and receive feedback on their presentations. On Friday, students finally had the chance to show all of their hard work to their parents. The parents enjoyed the presentations and they were sent feedback forms to help us improve for the actual exhibition in February.

Library

Library time was a little different than usual. Ms. T showed the students educational videos that were related to their exhibition central ideas. They watched a video discussing a woman who invented an environmentally-friendly, biodegradable plastic bag. The bag was so environmentally-friendly that after it dissolved in the water, the water was still drinkable! Also, they watched a video about how South Korea is combating food waste.

English

Students have been continuing to work on the skill of context clues. Also, students sent a request to Mr. Ulu requesting that students be allowed to bring laptops to school. However, since their request was denied to their essays not being persuasive enough, we went through those again and made edits. Additionally, students submitted their essays for the writing contest. They were to write a prequel that leads to how these men ended up in the coffins.

We have been continuing to learn how to use context to figure out the meaning of unknown words. During our centers, the kids played a tic-tac-toe context clues game to practice that skill.

Art

Grade 6 combined with Grade 5 for a special art lesson with Ms. Katherine. She taught the kids a couple of new art techniques. Then, we practiced them at a river near the school.

Buddy Activity

We paired up with Mr. Ben's Preschool class. His class has been learning about maps and directions. they used those skills to go to a different park nearby. Our class tagged along for a picnic and playtime there. This was an opportunity for Grade 6 students to show their caring side.

Week of October 21, 2019

Grade 6 began a new unit - Sharing the Planet. Since this is the theme that our PYP exhibition is centered around, students continued working on their personal central idea.

First, we reflected on the mini-exhibition that was held the previous week. We created a chart that shows that went well, problems that we encountered, and potential solutions to those problems.

Second, we created a rubric that would serve as a guide for the next mini-exhibition we will conduct in November.
