Weeks of September 21 and September 28, 2020

Grade 6 conducts their final literature circle for Fuzzy Mud.

During English, Grade 6 will begin writing argumentative essays. Students divided into groups and examined a picture along with a short background story. They had to determine whether the man lying on the ground in the picture had slipped or was killed by his wife. Using the clues provided, students had to create a claim and support their claim with evidence.

Students presented their findings to classmates on their chosen topic.

Weeks of September 14, 2020

Students worked with partners to explore one of the following topics as it relates to cultural exchange: Italian emigration; colonization; imperialism; the Crusades; the Silk roads; the spread of Islam. They created a slideshow of their research. Before they presented to the class, each student was given a venn diagram and made connections between their topic and the topics of each of the other groups. Then, they were to incorporate these connections into their presentations.

We had a class discussion on the various ways cultures impact each other. I illustrated these ways using a house.

During this week's reading centers, students practiced using the various types of pronouns using online games. Also, they practiced finding the main idea in our guided reading group and practiced their weekly vocabulary.

Grade 6 divided into groups to discuss their findings for their PYP Exhibition central idea and gave suggestions on the direction their peers could go in their research.

Week of September 7, 2020

On Friday, students dressed up as a book character of their choice.

As a part of literacy week, each class decorated their door or nearby wall with a book theme. Grade created a bookshelf of their favorite books. In order to make our decoration more interactive, we invited students from other classes to guess which book belonged to which grade 6 student.

Ms. T had a special library activity planned for students. They were to act out a story that Ms. T had created.

Week of August 31, 2020

For our new unit of inquiry, we are studying how the exchange of culture impacts societies. In order to gain a deeper understanding of the definition of culture, students created cultural icebergs to illustrate the deep and surface culture of their chosen country.

Students participated in our weekly literature circles for Fuzzy Mud.
